The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive and it is awarded to Girl Scouts who use their talents to positively impact their community.
In addition to the construction of the information kiosk for the Marysville Pioneer Cemetery, as part of her Gold Award project, Maria developed a comprehensive curriculum for use by Girl Scout Junior Troops which provides specific activities and information to learn about local history while working to earn the "Playing in the Past" badge. Her guide includes details about pioneer women of the Yuba City-Marysville area, tips for creating a pioneer costume, step by step instructions for making an apron, making butter, and learning to do basic cross stitch, and rules for three common pioneer-era children's games. The guide ends with information that a troop can utilize to take an educated historical walking tour of the Marysville Pioneer Cemetery along with answers to common questions about the cemetery itself.
